A capital under the gods' eyes
When you visit Athens, the Acropolis is one area you absolutely must see. Walk along the pedestrian-only cobblestone road, Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, winding your way up to the famous destination. As you make your way, there is plenty to see throughout the walk. One of the first things you will come across is the Ancient Theater of Dinyossos, dating back to the 5th Century B.C. as well as the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, built in 161 A.D.; both are where the Ancient Greeks held their events and performances.
When you finally reach the Acropolis, you will experience an abundance of astounding history. The Acropolis is believed to be one of the first sites of worship in Athens, dating all the way back to the Neolithic age. The first temples here were built in 650 B.C., and the temples still around today were built in the 5th century B.C. by the Athenian General Pericles.
After meandering through the cobblestone streets of the Acropolis, head to Monastiraki Square to experience the heart of Athens. Enjoy bazaar-like markets where you can find all kinds of souvenirs, from books to clothing to jewelry. The square gets its name from Pantanasia church in Plateia Monastirakou, opposite the current metro station. This church was built in the 10th century A.D.
Only one hour outside of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon is worth the visit. Overlooking the ocean, the temple is dedicated to the God of the Sea. Come here at sunset with a delicious picnic for an outstanding view over the clear blue Greek waters and white sand beach below.
Like every city in Europe, Athens is not without decent shopping. For designer boutiques and high end clothing stores, the area surrounding Kolonaki is absolutely not to be missed.
For those who want to find authentic jewelry, olive oils, ceramics, honey, and worry beads, the area around Plaka is absolutely the best destination.
Kentriki Agora (Central Market) is where to head if you are looking for a tradition Greek market, complete with meats, fruits, vegetables, and fish. Even if you do not have time to cook a meal, it is worth stopping by this market to get a feel for the traditional shopping of Greece.
People like to joke that Greece has coffee and cigarettes for breakfast. For those who want a little more to eat, these places serve delicious coffee and brunch.
After a delicious meal in Athens, head out for a drink.
New Hotel Athens is the first hotel project from Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana. The large picture windows, the bamboo floors and furniture and the touches of folklore give a certain bohemian soul to this new design hotel situated in the heart of Athens. The rooftop bar and the organic restaurant are definitely the new urban spot to discover the Greek capital.Pictures New Hotel Athenes – les Caryatides sur l’Acropole.
